Health & Wellness

There are a couple of sayings that are relevant with respect to SAIL's aspirations: "If you have your health, you have everything." and "You can have all the money in the world but if you don't have your health, you don't have anything." But let's add a third one: "Home is where the health is!"

At SAIL, we believe it's important for people to remain in the comfort of their own home for as long as they choose. Moving to a new home, especially late in life, should be when you want to, not because you have to!

As a SAIL member, you'll receive services to help you stay healthy and in your own home. There are five keys to maintaining good health as a senior, and SAIL has got them covered:

  • good nutrition, which includes daily supplements
  • socialization
  • proper medication management
  • regular exercise, focusing on cardiovascular, balance and strengthening
  • home safety and fall prevention awareness
  • All five of these service components and more are included in your SAIL membership through our health and wellness services.

    Caregivers - Respite Care
Caring for a loved one at home or in a health care facility is challenging and quite often, exhausting. All caregivers need a break, even though many caregivers think it's impossible to take the time. At SAIL, we can refer you to high quality services called respite care for this purpose. Agencies such as Home Health United, Catholic Charities and Independent Living have special funding, so getting help is affordable. SAIL members sometimes volunteer to provide companionship to fellow members as a means of providing respite.

    Caregiver Training
Through partnership with United Way, Catholic Charities and HospiceCare, there are excellent training and support opportunities for caregivers. Learn how to physically transfer your loved one, dress, bathe or feed him/her, cope with memory loss issues, etc. Call SAIL or these agencies for more information.

    Dining
Members are welcome to dine at Attic Angel Place or Oakwood Village West. Call SAIL for a current menu, discounted prices and reservation number.

    Free blood pressure checks
Call SAIL and set up an appointment with our parish nurse coordinator or her designee.

    Home Visits
Sometimes a friendly face is just what is needed to brighten up your day. We have volunteers who enjoy visiting fellow members.

    Home Safety
Call SAIL if you are interested in a free Home Safety evaluation. These are provided by staff or through RSVP. If modifications are recommended, we will assist you in arranging for them. We will also refer you to local agencies that have grant funds available should you meet the income requirements.

    Home Assessment
If you have an illness or disabling condition of any type, you may wish to consider having a professional assessment by an occupational or physical therapist. These are called functional assessments and provide you with information, tools and modification strategies that meet your individual needs. This goes beyond a home safety evaluation. In order for Medicare or health insurance to pay for this, your doctor needs to order this for you. Call SAIL if you would like assistance with requesting this.

Information and referral to community agencies
Dane County has a multitude of senior resources. We are happy to assist in finding a match for your needs. Some of these resources include: transportation for disabled riders, meals on wheels, home chores, case management, etc.

    Medications Consultation
Call or meet with SAIL's Personal Health Coach, pharmacist Alan Lukazewski, to review your medications, ask questions and learn more about natural supplements and lifestyle changes that could result in decreasing the number of medications you take.
